Bachikayakada Basavayyagala Punyastree Kalavve was wife of Basavayya who followed the occupation of a carpenter. 2 of her vachanas are available with the signature Karmahara Kaaleshwara.
Kālavve is the wife of carpenter Basavayya. As his name suggests, Basavayya's Kāyaka was carpentry. Like her husband's, Kālavve's Kayaka also was carpentry, since she assisted her husband in performing his sacred duty. Her Vacanankita and the technical terms she used in her Vachanas leave no doubt that doing wood work was her sacred dedicated work. Basavayya was also a Vachana writer. They lived about 1160 A.D.
Two Vachanas of Kālavve’s, bearing the signature ‘Karmahara Kálēśvara’, are available. Written in simple and lucid language, they speak of the importance of Kāyaka, Vrata and speech [word of promise], e.g., “Breach of Kāyaka should not be tolerated. And breach of a vow should never be tolerated.” It is clear from this Vachana that she attached more importance to Vrata.
Tells us that we should be extremely careful in the matter of keeping Kayaka, promise and Vrata. The slightest negligence on our part will undo us. The illustrations Kālavve has used here are not only unique and purposeful but also apt.
If careless while chippling,
it will cause harm to your legs
if careless while speaking,
it will cause harm your tongue
being in the company of a vow-breaker
will cause you to go to hell,
