Kadire Kaayakada Kalavve (ಕದಿರೆ ಕಾಯಕದ ಕಾಳವ್ವೆ)

Full Name: Kadire Kaayakada Kalavve (ಕದಿರೆ ಕಾಯಕದ ಕಾಳವ್ವೆ)
Pen Name (Vachana Signature): Gummesvara

Because of the adjective Kadira Kayaka prefixed to her name, Kālavve is supposed to have pursued the Kāyaka of spinning and weaving and belonged to the weaver community. Her time is about 1160 A.D., according to Kavi Charitakāra. Nothing else is known about her biography only one vachana of Kālavve's bearing the signature Gummesvara’ is available now. She uses the technical terms belonging to the Kāyaka of spinning and weaving in order to describe a devotee’s way of life. Her vachana emphasizes the importance of Kāyaka and Vrata. She warns the Śharaņeyas against embracing vow-breakers, since vow-breaking is a sin. According to Kālavve, devotion to work is the greatest of virtues and Kāyaka is nothing but a vow or a Vrata. So Kadira [spindle] is a symbol of her vrata. Breaking of a spinning wheel augurs ill to her, and it is as bad as breaking a vow. Just as with the breaking up of a spinning wheel all the activities pertaining to spinning stop, so also with the joining of a vow-breaker by a devotee his life becomes worthless and purposeless. So she attaches so much importance to adherence to vrata [vow]. She is as much vow-bound as Kāyaka-bound.
