Full Name: | Yedemathada Nagidevayyagala Punyastree Masanamma |
Pen Name (Vachana Signature): | Nijaguneshwaralinga |
There is no one who has eaten crow and dog.
There is no one who has united with a vow-breaker.
Does an orange go well with a dog?
Vows are for those born of Shiva’s seed,
do they go well with the men of this world?
You are the witness, o Nijaguneshwaralinga.
[Vachana No.1302]

Yedemathada Nagidevayyagala Punyastree Masanamma was wife of Yedemathada Nagideva
of Kanchi in Cholamandala. She came to Kalyaana along with him. Only one vachana
of hers is extant under the signature Nijaguneshwaralinga. In that vachana she tells
us about the significance of discipline.
Not much is known about Masanamma, the wife of Edemathada Nāgidévayya except that she came along with her husband Edemathada Nāgidévayya from Kanchi in Tamil Nadu to Karnataka. Only one of her Vachana being available, it bears the signature ‘Nijagunēśvaralinga'. She writes about the importance of vow for a devotee. She looks down upon breakers of vow and says “A vow-breaker is as low as those who eat a dog's flesh or a crow's meat. So none should join a vow-breaker”. She also calls the ignorant ones dogs that know nothing about the Supreme principle. Just as a dog does not find a coconut tasty, for it is a hard nut to crack literally, so also the ignorant ones find such subjects as philosophy and metaphysics, which indeed are a hard nut for them, difficult and tasteless.
