Guddavve (ಗುಡ್ಡವ್ವೆ)

Full Name: Battaleshwarana Punyastree Guddavve
Pen Name (Vachana Signature): Nimbeshwara

*

Battaleshwarana Punyastree Guddavve (c. 1430) was wife of Battaleshwara who was one among the group of hundred and one viraktas. Just 1 vachana with the signature Nimbeshwara is available.

Guddavve, the wife of Battalesvara, is supposed to have lived in the 15th century. Battaleswara is one of the Noorondu Viraktas [Hundred and one Viraktas], and a Vachana writer also. Only one Vachana of Guddavve is available. Her Vachana signature is ‘Nimbeswara". Faith in the observance of vow forms the subject of her Vachana. Although she is one of the many women writers who harp on the importance of observance of vow, Guddavve differs from others in her manner of presentation and in her concept of vow and its observance. According to her, unless a person observes a vow with purity of heart, he does not become a true Vratăcări. Instead, he remains a breaker of vow. The company of such an ostentatious observer of vow is worse than being in hell. So she asks:

What if the body is naked
unless the mind is naked too?
What use is holding on to a vow
after it is broken?
Bonding with such folks
is a sure way to hell o Nimbeshwara.
[Vachana No.1319] [1]

The term “Battale' meaning naked' is meaningful in this context, since her husband's name also is Battalesvara. The true meaning of the term Battale is ‘non-attachment'. Guddavve and her husband were both non-attached servants of Lord.
